High School Classics in the Preseason

ATLANTA -- Diehard fans of high school football in the Peach State have marked their calendars each season for those matchups between longtime rivals.  Conference realignment and classification changes have moved some of your favorites to the preseason and some of them are coming up this weekend.

Friday will find a number of matchups that would be regular season or post season classics.  Gainesville will host Grayson, while Lovejoy travels to Peachtree Ridge and Stephenson plays at North Gwinnett.

In a truly rare event, Berkmar will play at Buford.  This is rare because Gwinnett County teams never play Buford.  Who wants to look bad against a team from a lower classification?  Plus, after getting a look at Buford's complex parents will come home and start packing to move into the Buford school district.  I'm just keeping it real.

Tucker and Marist have played some classics over the years.  Now that they are no longer in the same region, the Tigers will visit the War Eagles for a scrimmage.

Then there are the matches schools located so close to each other, but not in the same region.  Allatoona at North Cobb fit the bill, as does East Paulding at McEachern and Pope at Lassiter.  Then there is Northview at John's Creek.  The two schools are exactly one mile apart.

But my two personal favorites are games that used to pack the stadiums back in the day.  Newnan versus Griffin is a matchup that for many years determined who would represent North Georgia in the state championship game.

While in the city Washington and Douglass would meet in a clash of the Atlanta titans.  These games won't mean what they used to, but for those who cherish memories of falls past it might just be work taking a look.

Remember 11Alive's coverage of high school football will begin Friday August 23rd on 11 Alive News at 11 O'clock.
