NEWNAN, Ga. -- Eight students from four Coweta County high schools have been selected for the prestigious Governor's Honors Program.

GHP gives talented high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to study areas in which they excel. It is a four-week summer program hosted by Valdosta State University.

Nearly 3,000 students from across Georgia were named semifinalists for the honor. That number was whittled down to 690 finalists.

Coweta County's eight GHP finalists were picked from 47 nominees. They include:

Central Education Center
* Mitchell Busby, technology

East Coweta HS
* Josue Araya, visual arts
* Dakota Becker, visual arts

Newnan HS
* Harrison Brown, music (tuba)
* Jeremy Messer, social studies
* Sarah Robinson, music (bassoon)

Northgate HS
* Audrey Goodman, communicative arts
* Amelia Merriman, music (oboe)
