NEWNAN: Tyler Perry gives great grandmother house

NEWNAN, Ga. -- You only have to see his movies to know grandmothers, especially gun-toting ones, are close to Tyler Perry's heart.

On Friday Tyler Perry turned over the keys and the deed to a brand new home to 88-year-old Rosa Lee Ransby and the seven grandchildren she raises.

Days before Christmas in 2010, her home burned to the ground. She and her great granddaughter escaped. The Newnan Fire Department turned to the community for donations to take care of the woman who was taking care of so many children.

Then, as if by a Christmas miracle, Atlanta TV and movie mogul Tyler Perry put Ransby and her whole family up in a rental house, that is until he could rebuild her entire home on the site it had burned down.

Perry was watching the news, thought of his own mother who died in 2009 and was moved.

Power back on for most Metro Atlantans

Power back on for most Metro Atlantans

ATLANTA -- More than 400,000 Georgia customers lost power in the wake of Monday night's storm. After a massive effort involving crews from eight states, all but about 500 Metro Atlantans are back online.

The homes and businesses still in the dark were evenly split between Georgia Power and Georgia Electric Membership Corporation customers as of Thursday morning. Statewide, just over 4,600 were still without power.

Cleanup will take much longer. Wild winds late Monday and Tuesday morning snapped power poles and trees like twigs across the region.

At least nine people were killed by the storms that tore through the Southeast. Bright lightning, loud thunder and wind gusts above 60 miles per hour streaked through, dumping rain and hail across the region.

Metro Atlanta's best hospitals ranked

ATLANTA -- The unofficial authority for college and university rankings is switching gears. For the first time ever, U.S. News and World Report has ranked the best hospitals in America's largest cities.

Out of the 57 hospitals in Metro Atlanta, Emory University Hospital tops the list.

It's followed by the Shepherd Center, Piedmont Hospital, Emory University Hospital Midtown (formerly Emory Crawford Long Hospital) and Kennestone Hospital.

The "metro Atlanta" rankings provided by U.S. News and World report only identified hospitals in the City of Atlanta, Sandy Springs and Marietta.  Children's hospitals also were not included in the rankings.

Heavy rains, fog slow morning commute

ATLANTA -- Rush hour was expected to be more frustrating for commuters than usual Wednesday morning as heavy rain showers swept across Metro Atlanta.

The line of storms reached the Atlanta area early Wednesday morning.  It brought heavy rain, lightning and thunder to the pre-dawn hours.  Pea-sized hail was possible along with gusty winds, 11Alive Meteorologist Chesley McNeil said.

Heavy fog also complicated the morning commute, bringing visibility levels down to less than one mile, McNeil said.
