NEWNAN: Boys dig up human bones behind backyard
NEWNAN, Ga. -- It was like a scene right out of a TV show, kids digging in the woods uncovered human remains.
Coweta County Sheriff Mike Yeagar said two preteen boys were going camping in the woods behind their house when they made the gruesome discovery on Friday.
"They had cleared the area, pitched their tent and were digging a fire pit, when one of the boys kept hitting what he thought were rocks," Yeagar said. "They hit a skull."
In the hours to come, the sheriff said his officers would recover most of a skeleton. In the days since, the sheriff's office has combed through cold cases dating 20 years back.
"We're hoping that maybe will help ID the victim," Yeagar said.
The bones have been handed over to the GBI.
