Local firefighters discuss using fire shelters

NEWNAN, Ga. -- The flames that killed 19 firefighters may be in Arizona, but the sense of loss could still be felt at the Forestry Commission office in Newnan, Georgia.

Firefighters trained to battle wild fires in Georgia receive the same training as the "hotshots," just not with the same intensity.

"Fighting fires for 14 days on foot with shovels and rakes, up and down hills, you've got to be in shape.  And they train year round for that stuff, both mentally and physically," said Chief Ranger Terry Quigley.

Quigley says in Georgia we use bulldozers rather than hand crews, because our terrain is generally flatter and state and local laws permit equipment to create fire breaks.

The fires out west also tend to consume different kinds of grasses. Last fiscal year, Georgia had 4,140 forest fires, consuming 19,693 acres of land.

Coweta man gets federal contracts meant for vets

NEWNAN, Ga. -- A Coweta County man has been sentenced to two years in prison for fraudulently obtaining government construction contracts reserved for veterans with service-related disabilities.

Arthur W. Singleton, 63, owned a construction firm named "Singleton Enterprises" and had over 30 years of experience in the construction industry. According to United States Attorney Sally Quillian Yates, in 2007 Singleton approached a Vietnam veteran who was bedridden from surgeries related to his combat injuries and advocated a business that would exploit the veteran's disabled status to obtain federal government contracts that were reserved exclusively for companies owned and run by service-disabled veterans. Once the veteran agreed to the scheme, Singleton formed two companies using the veteran's name.

Unemployment rate declines to 7.6 percent

Unemployment rate declines to 7.6 percent

ATLANTA -- Unemployment rates fell in almost all large U.S. cities, including Atlanta, in April.

The metro area's jobless rate dropped to 7.6 percent, down from 7.9 percent in March.

In Coweta County, the unemployment rate was 7.0 percent in April.

The drop was due in part to an increase in the number of jobs in metro Atlanta. Most of the new positions were in professional and business services; trade and transportation; leisure and hospitality; education and health services; and construction.

Metro Athens had the state's lowest jobless rate at 5.6 percent. The highest was in the Heart of Georgia-Altamaha region, at 10.3 percent.
