Weekend traffic: Roadwork on I-20, cyclists on Ga. 400

Unemployment climbs in metro Atlanta

Unemployment climbs in metro Atlanta

(WXIA) -- Metro Atlanta's unemployment rate climbed eight-tenths of a point in one month.

May's rate was 7.3 percent, considerably higher than April's 6.5 percent.

In Coweta County, the rate was 7.0 percent in May.

Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said the spike was mostly due to new graduates entering the workforce. The Atlanta area's labor force grew by about 24,400 in May.

Metro Athens had last month's lowest area jobless rate at 5.7 percent. The Heart of Georgia-Altamaha region's was the highest at 9.8 percent.

Man survives being struck by lightning

NEWNAN, Ga. -- A Coweta County man is thankful to be alive after literally being blown out of his boots by lightning on Saturday afternoon.

Sean O'Connor was in his front yard Saturday during what he described as a sunny day. It started to sprinkle and as he reached for the rake, he says heard a loud noise.

"I thought it was a tree limb falling, but moments later I found myself across the driveway on the ground," said O'Connor.

The lightning strike blew him out of his work boots. When he looked back at them they were still smoldering.

"That's where the doctors believe the lightning bolt actually entered my body. They believe it was a direct strike," said O'Connor.

He's definitely going to need a new pair of work boots. His current pair is charred. The right shoe has a hole in the toe where the leather disintegrated.
