NEWNAN: Trooper hit while helping driver on I-85 now recovering

NEWNAN, Ga. -- Authorities say a Georgia State Patrol trooper was struck by a pickup truck while helping a stranded motorist on Interstate 85 during Thursday's evening rush hour.

The Georgia State Patrol says Trooper Brandon Kight was struck near mile marker 52 on I-85, after 5 p.m.

The the 29-year-old trooper was helping 31-year-old Donald Moore of Newnan change a tire on his van.

Kight was working in the inside lane, against the median wall, when a passing pickup truck struck the van, slamming the trooper and Moore against the wall.

Moore was airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center with serious injuries.

Kight was taken to Atlanta Medical by ambulance and is expected to be released later Friday. Georgia State Patrol Lt. Paul Cosper said Kight was cut, but not seriously injured.

A 59-year-old California woman was also hurt in the crash. GSP said the pickup rear-ended Marcia Saurman's Nissan Rogue. She was take to Piedmont Newnan Hospital.

Charge against the pickup driver are pending. He's been identified as 28-year-old Parl Beaube Burgess of Marion Junction, Ala. He was not hurt.

Authorities said all southbound lanes at the crash site were shut down into Thursday evening as officials cleared the scene and conducted an investigation.
