ATLANTA -- State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler says application deadlines are approaching to file initial claims for disaster unemployment assistance benefits relating to tornadoes that struck the state late last month.

Butler says workers in Bartow, Catoosa, Coweta, Dade, Floyd, Greene, Lamar, Meriwether, Monroe, Morgan, Pickens, Polk, Rabun, Spalding, Troup and Walker counties have until next Wednesday to file initial claims.

The deadline is the following day in Gordon, Harris, Heard and Lumpkin counties, while workers in Cherokee, Habersham, Newton, Upson and White counties have an additional day, until June 3.

The federal program's maximum weekly benefit is $330.
