5 more Ga. counties added to federal disaster list
News

ATLANTA -- Ken Higgenbotham of FEMA said Sunday that Coweta, Green, Lamar, Pickens, and Troup counties are now eligible for federal disaster assistance. These counties are in addition to the seven counties announced Saturday.

Meanwhile, Tennessee is now eligible for federal disaster assistance.

President Barack Obama signed the declaration after last week's line of tornado-spawning storms that killed at least 34 people in the state. The storms killed at least 342 people.

Obama had already signed disaster declarations for Alabama, Mississippi and Georgia.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano says the recovery from Wednesday's tornadoes that ravaged seven Southern states is not going to be quick.

But as she toured the damage in Alabama and Mississippi, Napolitano said she's confident it will be complete.

Napolitano visited hard-hit areas of Birmingham, Ala., and Smithville, Miss.

Napolitano says she's "not articulate enough" to describe the level of devastation she's seen. She's promising that federal help will keep flowing.
