ATLANTA -- Metro Atlanta's unemployment rate fell to 8.0 percent in August.

That's down six-tenths of a percentage point from 8.6 percent in July.

In Coweta County, the unemployment rate was 7.7 percent in August.

The Georgia Department of Labor said the decrease was due to fewer layoffs and a spike in the number of jobs.

Metro Atlanta has gained 57,100 jobs over the past year, according to Labor Commissioner Mark Butler. Many of those jobs were in business services, trade and transportation, education, health care and construction.

Metro Athens had Georgia's lowest August unemployment rate at 6.1. The highest was 11.9 percent in the Heart of Georgia-Altamaha region.
