'The Nutcracker' coming to The Centre

NEWNAN, Ga. -- A special production of The Nutcracker will begin its run at Coweta County's Centre for Performing & Visual Arts next weekend.

The classic Christmas ballet will perform on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 9 at 3 p.m. An additional performance for students in Coweta County Schools will be held at 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 11.

The Centre is located at 1523 Lower Fayetteville Road in Newnan.

Belk santafest to spread holiday cheer

ATLANTA -- Belk department stores will host their first-ever santafest holiday celebration on Saturday, Dec. 1.

All santafests will be held from noon to 3 p.m.

Highlights include crafts, family-friend activities, Christmas treats and, of course, the chance to meet Santa Claus. Participants can enter a drawing to win a $50 kids wardrobe; three winners will be chosen from each Belk store.

Monkey Joe's to raise money for Community Welcome House

NEWNAN, Ga. -- Monkey Joe's is doing its part to help local families affected by domestic violence.

The bounce house paradise will hold a fundraiser for Coweta County's Community Welcome House, which helps women and children escape and recover from abusive homes.

Monkey Joe's will mark down its T-shirt prices from $9.99 to $7.99 from Nov. 16 through Nov. 25. A percentage of funds from each shirt sold will go to Community Welcome House.

Humane Society hosts 9 Lives for $9 adoption event

NEWNAN, Ga. -- The Newnan Coweta Humane Society is giving residents a chance to adopt a new furry family member for only $9.

The 9 Lives for $9 adoption event will be held every Sunday in November at the PetSmart on Bullsboro Drive. Customers are invited to visit the store, meet the adoptable cats and learn more about ways to save innocent animals.

"Every day, 9,000 animals are killed in shelters simply because they don't have homes," Newnan Coweta Humane Society president LouAnn Jones said in a statement. "Just by adopting a cat or two, everyone can be part of the nationwide movement to end the killing of adoptable, treatable animals."

Atlanta Opera's 'Stone Soup' coming to The Centre

NEWNAN, Ga. -- The Atlanta Opera is bringing its latest children's opera, "Stone Soup," to the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts.

"Stone Soup: An Operatic Fable in One Delicious Act" is a 45-minute, light-hearted interpretation of the classic folktale about a hungry soldier who convinces a woman to include his stone in her vegetable soup.

The production will have two shows -- one at 9:15 a.m., the other at 12:15 p.m. -- on Monday, Oct. 29. Admission is free.

"Stone Soup" is geared toward children in grades K-5.

UWG gearing up for annual Economic Forecast Breakfast

CARROLLTON, Ga. -- It's almost time for the University of West Georgia's annual Economic Forecast Breakfast.

This year's event will be held at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 30 in UWG's Campus Center Ballroom. It is sponsored by the Richards College of Business and the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce.

UWG associate professor of economics Dr. William "Joey" Smith plans to give the economic forecast for west Georgia, while BB&T Capital Markets COO John B. Jung Jr. will cover the economy of the United States.

All breakfast attendees will go home with a copy of the 2012 West Georgia Regional Outlook, which provides economic breakdowns for Carroll, Coweta, Douglas, Haralson and Paulding counties.

The cost is $30 per person or $200 for a table of eight. Register no later than Monday, Oct. 22.
