Blind Boys of Alabama to perform at The Centre

NEWNAN, Ga. -- Award-winning gospel group Blind Boys of Alabama will perform at Coweta County's Centre for Performing and Visual Arts next month.

The show, which is expected to sell out, will be Sunday, Mar. 15 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at thecentreonline.com.

Blind Boys of Alabama consists of eight musicians, including four blind singers. The group first performed in 1944.

"Our disability doesn't have to be a handicap," said Ricky McKinnie, one of the group's blind musicians. "It's not about what you can't do. It's about what you do. And what we do is sing good gospel music."

The Centre is located at 1523 Lower Fayetteville Road in Newnan.

Piedmont Newnan Hospital to host caregiver workshop

NEWNAN, Ga. – Piedmont Newnan Hospital’s Sixty Plus Services will host a workshop “Caregiving for Loved Ones With Dementia” on Wednesday, Mar. 11 from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The workshop will address the types and stages of dementia, community resources, financial and legal concerns, communication techniques and the role of medications in managing challenging behaviors.

“We know that caregivers can easily and quickly find themselves dealing with an enormous amount of stress. The goal of this workshop is to provide them with the right tools and resources to help ease the tremendous pressure they’re under, as well as those very common feelings of grief and isolation,” said Tori Sorrells, coordinator of Sixty Plus Services at Piedmont Newnan Hospital.

Chick-fil-A to host Daddy-Daughter Date Night

(WXIA) -- Chick-fil-A will bring back its popular Daddy-Daughter Date Night this weekend.

The fifth annual event will be Saturday, Feb. 7 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at participating restaurants.

Daddy-Daughter Date Night encourages fathers and their little girls to spend time together. Every "couple" will receive take-home booklets featuring conversation starters and ideas for future outings.

Attendees will also be treated to tableside service, limousine and trolley rides, and other surprises.

Daddy-Daughter Date Night is free, except for the cost of food. Seating is available every hour; fathers and daughters are encouraged to call their local Chick-fil-A locations in advance to reserve a time.

Race this weekend: Run for Angels

NEWNAN, Ga. -- The Run for Angels, the Angels House's largest fundraiser, returns to Coweta County this weekend.

The 5K and 10K will be held Saturday, Feb. 7 in downtown Newnan. Both races begin on Greenville Street between Salbide Avenue and Savannah Street, and end at the First United Methodist Church on Salbide Avenue.

Race day registration opens at 7 a.m., and the first race -- a 1-mile fun run -- will begin at 8 a.m.

The Run for Angels is an AJC Peachtree Road Race qualifier.

Registration is $25 for the fun run, $30 for the 5K and $35 for the 10K. Funds will benefit the the Angels House, a group home for children in need.

Manpower to hold career fair in Newnan

Manpower to hold career fair in Newnan

NEWNAN, Ga. -- Manpower will hold a job fair at the Goodwill Career Center in Newnan this week.

The company is looking for forklift operators and assembly line workers to help manufacture parts for Kia cars. Candidates must be able to lift 30 pounds above their heads, and are required to undergo drug and background checks.

The career fair will be Friday, Oct. 17 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Advance registration is required and can be completed at manpowerjobs.com; select "Sandy Springs-GA" as the closest location.

Goodwill's Newnan Career Center is located at 228 Bullsboro Drive.

South City Winds Quintet to give free concert

South City Winds Quintet to give free concert

NEWNAN, Ga. -- The South City Wind Quintet will give a free concert at Coweta County's Centre for Performing and Visual Arts this weekend.

The group is made up of musicians from metro Atlanta, including Coweta County-based band director Rusty Wilson.

They will perform chamber music at the Centre on Sunday, Sept. 21 at 3 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend.

Piedmont Newnan Hospital gears up for September’s Walk with a Doc

NEWNAN, Ga. -- Piedmont Newnan Hospital invites all members of the Coweta County community to take part in the next Walk With a Doc on Saturday, Sept. 27 at Carl Miller Park, 70 Sewell Road in Newnan.

Maria Goyco, M.D. of Piedmont Physicians Group in Newnan will lead the walk. Dr. Goyco, who is bilingual in Spanish and English, has been in practice for 15 years in the Metro Atlanta area. She is board certified in family medicine and is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Georgia Academy of Family Physicians. She has a special interest in preventative medicine and women’s care.

Walkers are encouraged to gather at the park by 8:15 a.m. as the walk begins promptly at 8:30 a.m. Dr. Goyco will take five minutes to talk about a health topic of her choice before leading participants on a walk through the park while she answers questions from participants.
