ROSWELL, Ga. -- Metro Atlanta students have come through for their fellow children in a big way, "spreading the love" through peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

Bank of North Georgia and Bank of Coweta recently hosted their fourth annual food drive to benefit 30 local food pantries. The "Spread the Love" PB&J Food Drive just ended on Saturday, May 14.

In total, the two banks collected 5,899 jars (7,997 pounds) of peanut butter and jelly, which is enough to make 63,978 sandwiches.

"The challenging economy has caused more and more families to reach out to local food banks for assistance, and we felt compelled to take action," said Don Howard, regional CEO for Synovus Bank, the parent company of Bank of North Georgia and Bank of Coweta.

Since 2008, Bank of North Georgia has collected more than 10 tons of peanut butter and jelly through this initiative. This year, they brought it to a whole new level by inviting Bank of Coweta and 17 partner schools to participate:

* Alpharetta Elementary School
* Central Elementary School, Carrollton
* Cherokee High School, Canton
* Chrysalis Experiential Academy, Roswell
* Crabapple Lane Elementary School, Peachtree City
* East Coweta High School, Sharpsburg
* Georgia Ballet, Marietta
* Huddleston Elementary School, Peachtree City
* Jasper Middle School
* Livsey Elementary School, Tucker
* Marietta Middle School
* Mt. Bethel Elementary School, Marietta
* Newnan High School
* Northgate High School, Newnan
* Porterdale Elementary School, Covington
* Sandy Springs Middle School
* Tyrone Elementary School

"Inviting our local school partners to join in the collection effort proved that we can make a tremendous impact when we work together to support a worthy cause," said Howard. "We are so pleased that the 17 partner schools contributed 42 percent of the total jars collected this year."

The food pantry that received the most PB&J was North Fulton Community Charities (11270 Elkins Road, Roswell, 30076) with 1,353 jars. Chrysalis Experiential Academy collected 800 jars -- the most of any school -- while the Jefferson Street location of Bank of Coweta collected the most jars of any bank with 337.
