'Secret Life of Bees' celebrated at The Centre

NEWNAN, Ga. -- A much-beloved novel will come to life at the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts in January.

The New York-based American Place Theatre's Literature to Life program has adapted Sue Monk Kidd's The Secret Life of Bees, a story about a 14-year-old girl whose life is changed by a trio of beekeeping sisters during the civil rights movement.

Actress Denise Wilbanks will perform The Secret Life of Bees at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 9. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased by calling 770-254-2787.

Bees author Kidd will speak at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 10. Tickets for her talk are also $10.

USAF band holding free Christmas concert

NEWNAN, Ga. -- The Band of the United States Air Force Reserve will hold a free holiday concert in Coweta County.

The show will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13 at The Centre for Performing & Visual Arts.

Admission is free, but tickets are required. Tickets can be picked up at The Centre's box office, which is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

'The Nutcracker' coming to The Centre

NEWNAN, Ga. -- A special production of The Nutcracker will begin its run at Coweta County's Centre for Performing & Visual Arts next weekend.

The classic Christmas ballet will perform on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 9 at 3 p.m. An additional performance for students in Coweta County Schools will be held at 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 11.

'Spring Awakening,' 'Red' take top Suzi Awards

ATLANTA -- Monday was a huge night for metro Atlanta theater, as the winners of the 2012 Suzi Bass Awards were announced at the Porter Sanford Performing Arts Center in DeKalb County.

Some of the area's most talented actors, directors and techies walked away with Suzis, which are among the top honors for Atlanta theater productions.

The award for Outstanding Production of a Musical went to the Actor's Express staging of Spring Awakening, while Theatrical Outfit's Red won Outstanding Production of a Play.

ATLANTA -- Every year, the Gene-Gabriel Moore Playwriting Award honors a production that debuts at one of the Atlanta area's many theaters.

Local playwrights from across the metro try to win the award every season. This year, seven new plays are eligible.

The Gene-Gabriel Moore Playwriting Award will be presented by local author and playwright Pearl Cleage at the 8th annual Suzi Bass Awards on Monday, Nov. 5.

Atlanta Opera's 'Stone Soup' coming to The Centre

NEWNAN, Ga. -- The Atlanta Opera is bringing its latest children's opera, "Stone Soup," to the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts.

"Stone Soup: An Operatic Fable in One Delicious Act" is a 45-minute, light-hearted interpretation of the classic folktale about a hungry soldier who convinces a woman to include his stone in her vegetable soup.

The production will have two shows -- one at 9:15 a.m., the other at 12:15 p.m. -- on Monday, Oct. 29. Admission is free.

"Stone Soup" is geared toward children in grades K-5.
