CARROLLTON, GA -- Newnan Hospital, Inc. announced today that it has donated $2 million, the largest one-time gift in University of West Georgia history, to benefit the School of Nursing at UWG-Newnan.

"This gift is cause for great celebration," said Beheruz N. Sethna, president of UWG. "It supports academics, our top priority, and recognizes the great achievements of our School of Nursing. It addresses a statewide and national need to increase the number of qualified nurses."

"The university already offers a full nursing program here, and we hope that this donation will inspire the future development of the program here at home in Coweta County," said Tom Moat, president of the board of directors of Newnan Hospital. "Newnan Hospital cared for the community for almost 90 years and our board felt that it is important for us to support the university in providing the best possible training for nurses at Newnan."

The Newnan nursing program has grown substantially since it began in 2005, said Cathy Wright, director of UWG-Newnan.

"Every year, we are challenged to find more space for nursing," Wright said. "The funding for both construction and faculty support will allow the nursing program to continue to grow and to provide more highly trained nurses for our county's increasing number of medical institutions."

Newnan Hospital's gift will be divided into two parts: $1 million will be used for construction, renovation, repair and replacement of facilities and equipment, and the remaining $1 million will be used to establish an endowment for program and faculty support of the school.

The hospital, which was recently sold, leaves a strong legacy of community service.

"With this gift, Newnan Hospital can continue to care for our community by helping to provide nurses for years to come," Moat said.
