News

ATLANTA -- Georgia's high school football season is over, but the speculation does not have to stop. In addition to reviewing the computer's predictions, Atlanta.HighSchoolSports.net takes a look at how good this year's champions are compared to teams from the past.

This year, Massey Matchups correctly predicted three of five state champions. The computer predictor tool finished with a 23-12 record in the final three rounds of the state playoffs. In the regular season, Massey Matchups finished 161-46, bringing its overall season record to 184-58.

The computer's prediction for each championship game is on the left; the actual final score appears on the right.

Brookwood 38, Colquitt County 28; Brookwood wins 52-38

Starr's Mill 35, Chattahoochee 28; Chattahoochee wins 24-0

Carrollton 33, Sandy Creek 20; Sandy Creek wins 14-7

Buford 28, Calhoun 27; Buford wins 31-24

Clinch County 23, Savannah Christian 14; Clinch County wins 24-14

Here is a full recap of each state championship game.

Massey Matchups also has a feature that allows you to see how current teams stack up against teams from the past. Here are how some past champions would do against the current state champs.

2010 Buford 21, 2009 Buford 14

2010 Buford 21, 2008 Buford 16

2010 Buford 48, 2007 Buford 0

2010 Sandy Creek 21, 2009 4A champion Sandy Creek 20

2009 5A champion Camden County 24, 2010 Brookwood 21

2010 Clinch County 33, 2009 Single-A champion Wilcox County 14

2010 Sandy Creek 27, 2009 3A champion Peach County 20

Even though Massey Matchups seems to give the benefit of the doubt to this year's teams, many national rankings have considered this to be a down year for Georgia high school football. After Camden County and North Gwinnett were beaten in the playoffs, the USA TODAY Super 25, a national high school poll, dropped all Georgia teams out of the rankings. Another poll, the computer-based Massey Ratings, gave little respect to Georgia the whole year. North Gwinnett was the only team to ever crack that Top 25. Even then, the Bulldogs never made it anywhere near the Top Ten.

In the end, only one Georgia team cracked the Top 25 of either poll. The Super 25 ranked Brookwood, the 5A champion, as the 24th best team in the country. Previously unranked, Brookwood beat Colquitt County 52-38 to cap off a 14-1 season in which the Broncos won 12 straight games.

It should be noted that several states are still playing high school football, so the Broncos could drop out of the Super 25 or move up. The final rankings will be released December 20.
