Region 8-4A Battle Wins Game of the Week Honors
News

FLOWERY BRANCH, GA -- The votes are in and with 41.1 percent of the tally, Atlanta.HighSchoolSports.net's Game of the Week is Apalachee at Flowery Branch.

The Region 8-4A match-up features a 1-0 Apalachee team and the 2-0 Falcons. Flowery Branch beat Madison County 21-0 on the road and topped Winder-Barrow 28-0 at home.

Apalachee beat Habersham Central 35-7 at home, but now the Wildcats are on the road facing a team that has yet to give up a single point.

Up from 3A, Flowery Branch will be playing a host of new region teams, including Apalachee, whom they have never met. Though still early in the season, this game could be a big clue as to how Region 8-4A will play out.

With 36 percent of this week's vote, Peachtree Ridge-Newnan almost edged out the Falcon-Wildcat match-up. But a late rush of votes put the battle at the Branch on top.

Being the second highest vote-getter does not change the magnitude of the Peachtree Ridge-Newnan game. Though the two teams are in different regions, both the Lions and the Cougars have unblemished records on the line.

Newnan is 1-0 after a 27-13 win over LaGrange, but Peachtree Ridge has had the tougher schedule so far. The Lions are 2-0 after a huge three-point win over McEachern in the Corky Kell Classic and a 24-17 win over Roswell.

Peachtree Ridge and Newnan are two of the higher-ranked teams in 5A and a statement by one of these teams could carry into November and December.

It is the first time these two teams have played.

The third highest vote-getter this week is the non-region 5A match-up of North Cobb at Lassiter. Lassiter kicked off the season with a loss to North Gwinnett in the Corky Kell Classic, but the Trojans got back on track with a 27-20 win over Sprayberry. Now they host a 1-1 North Cobb team who lost to Alpharetta in their season opener, but beat Centennial 21-14 in Week Two.

The final nominee for Game of the Week is Region 6-2A battle Westminster at Buford. Both teams are looking to rebound from losses to Carrollton and Carver-Columbus, respectively.

Westminster started the season off right with a 20-12 win over St. Pius, but Carrollton got the best of the Wildcats in Week Two, beating the Atlanta school 35-7. Westminster will be looking to jumpstart their offense against Buford, but the Wolves will be every bit as motivated.

Buford lost to Carver-Columbus in Week Two in what was only their sixth loss since 2000.

Last year, after losing to Lovett, Buford won 12 straight games and a 2A state championship.
