Newton Could Be Atlanta's First Heisman Winner
News

ATLANTA -- Should Auburn quarterback Cam Newton win the Heisman Trophy, as many predict he will, he would be the first Atlanta native to take home college football's most prestigious award. Three native Georgians have won the award, but none of them were from Atlanta.

Newton played high school football at College Park's Westlake High School, graduating in 2007.

Coming out of Westlake, Newton was rated as one of the nation's top quarterback prospects. His high school head coach, current Douglass-Atlanta coach Dallas Allen, said, "Even when Cameron played his first football game for me, I knew that he had a chance to play on Sunday."

"He's just that type of athlete who will give you everything you got and I still don't think Cam has reached his full potential yet," he said.

In his senior football season, Newton helped Westlake to the second round of the playoffs for the second straight year. He committed to play football at Florida, but transferred to Blinn Junior College after his freshman season. There, he helped his team win the NJCAA national championship.

He then transferred to Auburn for his junior season. With the Tigers, Newton has accounted for almost 4000 total yards and 49 touchdowns. Auburn beat South Carolina to win the SEC Championship last Saturday and will play Oregon in this year's national championship game.

Newton will be in New York this weekend for the Heisman announcement. Oregon's LaMichael James, Stanford's Andrew Luck, and Boise State's Kellen Moore are also Heisman finalists.

Three Georgia natives have won the Heisman Trophy before, but a player from Atlanta has never won. In 1980, South Carolina running back and Duluth High School alum George Rogers won the award.

In that year, another Georgia native, Herschel Walker, placed third. Walker, from Wrightsville, Georgia, won the award two years later. He played high school football at Johnson County.

Florida State quarterback Charlie Ward, from Thomas County Central, won the Heisman Trophy in 1993.
