GRIFFIN, GA - Hundreds of people lined the streets of Griffin on Tuesday to honor the sacrifice of 20-year-old U.S. Marine Corps Lance Corporal Christopher Blake Rodgers.

Blake, as his family and friends knew him, died of combat wounds suffered in Afghanistan last Wednesday.

His combat tour, which began last March, was to have ended in two weeks.

Among those saluting the motorcade escorting Rodgers' body home was a former high school classmate, U.S. Army Private First Class Andrew Roberson.

He is scheduled to deploy to Afghanistan in December.

"It makes you think about the impression that I'm gonna leave whenever I do go over there, if something happens," Roberson said.

Blake Rodgers joined the Marines a few months after graduating from high school in 2008.

But his uncle says Blake committed to serve his country at a much younger age.

"Just a wonderful kid who knew at age 11 on September 11th of 2001 when he announced to his parents that he wanted to serve; he knew that he wanted to serve as a Marine," said John Lowrimore.

Lowrimore, who called his nephew a "second son", described Rodgers as a humble and unassuming young man.

"I don't think you'd find anybody that ever had a bad word to say about Blake," Lowrimore said, "He would help anybody at any time with anything and never took credit for anything on his own."

As an only son, Blake's death is double loss for his mother, whose own mother died just last week.

His grandfather, who still remembers Blake as an adventurous boy who loved the outdoors, said those memories will help keep him alive.

"It hurts. It hurts, but he did it for his country," Paul Pierce said of his grandson.

"He loved the Marines; He did it for his country and I'm grateful; we're gonna miss him," Pierce added.

Ironically, this young man who decided to become a Marine on September 11th, 2001 will be buried on the 9th anniversary of that attack.

His funeral is set for this coming Saturday at Griffin's Oak Hill Baptist Church on Lakeside Road.
