Game of the Week Nominees: Semifinals
News

SNELLVILLE, GA -- The nominations for Game of the Week include a dynamic offense vs. a stout defense, two rematches from earlier in the season, and a battle of two seriously long win streaks. Which game won this week's honors?

With 40 percent of the online vote, Collins Hill at Brookwood is 11Alive and Atlanta.HighSchoolSports.net's Game of the Week. The two 5A teams played earlier in the season, but the stakes and circumstances were much different then.

It was both teams' second game of the season. The Broncos were 1-0 and coming off of a 27-10 win over Walton in the Corky Kell Classic. Collins Hill was 1-0 and coming off of a 13-9 win over Roswell.

Brookwood won 45-38 in double overtime and went on to win 10 of their next 11 games. Collins Hill lost their next two games, but turned a 1-3 record into 10-3.

The Broncos have been impressive in the playoffs so far, winning all three games by ten points or more. Collins Hill beat Woodstock 7-3 in Round One, beat Roswell by eleven points in Round Two, and then beat Lowndes in overtime last week in Valdosta.

Their most recent common opponent is Norcross. Brookwood beat the Blue Devils 34-24 in Round Two of the playoffs and Collins Hill beat Norcross 42-0 five weeks ago. Then again, that does not mean too much, especially in the semifinals.

The winner will play either Colquitt County or Grayson in the finals.

Peach County at Sandy Creek took second place in the Game of the Week voting. This 3A matchup pits two defending state champions against each other.

The Peach County Trojans have won 28 straight games and are the defending 3A champs. The Sandy Creek Fighting Patriots have won 27 straight games and are the defending 4A champs. They dropped down to 3A this past offseason due to reclassification.

Both teams are undefeated this season and both squads have looked great this postseason. Peach County won their first two playoff games by a combined score of 82-0. Then, the Trojans scored 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to beat Grady 42-35 in the quarterfinals.

Sandy Creek has outscored their playoff opponents 133-3 and has not given up a point in three weeks. Whoever wins this week will face either Carrollton or Burke County in the 3A title game.

Region 6-2A matchup Lovett at Buford was also nominated for Game of the Week. This game is a rematch of Buford's 37-14 win over Lovett back on September 24.

Lovett, a four seed this year, is playing in its fourth semifinal game in five seasons. The Lions "only" made the quarterfinals in 2008.

Buford, a one seed, has won three consecutive state championships and has won six state championships since 2001; five of their titles were won in 2A and one was won in Single-A.

Either Buford or Lovett will play the winner of Calhoun-Carver-Columbus.

The final nominee for Game of the Week was Colquitt County at Grayson. Colquitt County has averaged more than 41 points per game so far this postseason. Grayson has shut out two playoff opponents (North Forsyth and Valdosta) and only gave up 19 points to North Gwinnett in Round Two.

These two teams have never played before.

On Friday, 11Alive and Atlanta.HighSchoolSports.net will host a live online chat where you can sound off about certain games and see the latest semifinal scores. The chat will start at 8:45 p.m.
