Many Kids Need 2 Doses of Flu Vaccine

ATLANTA -- While most people will need only one flu shot or spray to guard against H1N1 and the seasonal flu, this year, many children will need two, according to the CDC.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends two doses of 2010-11 flu vaccine for children 6 months through 8 years of age unless they received at least one dose of 2009 H1N1 vaccine last flu season and at least one dose of seasonal vaccine prior to the 2009-2010 flu season or two doses of seasonal flu vaccine last flu season.

The first dose "primes" the immune system, while the second dose provides immune protection, according to the CDC. The second dose should be given 28 or more days after the first dose.

North Atlanta Pediatrics explains it this way on its website:

Mendenhall's TD in OT leads Steelers over Falcons

Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Rashard Mendenhall broke off a 50-yard game-
winning touchdown run on the Steelers' first play of overtime as Pittsburgh
persevered for a 15-9 win over Atlanta in a defensive battle at Heinz Field.

After the Falcons faltered on the first possession of OT, Michael Koenen's
poor 36-yard punt from the 14-yard-line gave the Steelers prime field
position.

Mendenhall wasted little time in making it count, bursting through a hole off
right tackle sealed off by a textbook block from tight end David Johnson on
his way to the end zone.

Mendenhall ended with 120 yards on 22 carries while Hines Ward came up huge
for Dennis Dixon with six catches for 108 yards.

Massey Matchups Picks Week Three Winners

FLOWERY BRANCH, GA -- Flowery Branch and Apalachee won the vote for Game of the Week, but who will win the game? Massey Matchups lets us know.

With the edge of home field advantage, Flowery Branch is predicted to squeak by Apalachee with a 25-23 win. Massey Matchups takes a game's venue into account by allowing a fan to choose which team is home, away, or playing on a neutral field. In this particular case, home field was the deciding factor. When Apalachee is switched from visitor to home team, Apalchee gets the 24-23 nod.

If the two teams were to play on a neutral field, Massey Matchups predicts Apalachee and Flowery Branch would play to a draw. But the Falcons are at home, so the Massey Matchups gives the benefit of the doubt to Flowery Branch.

Region 8-4A Battle Wins Game of the Week Honors

FLOWERY BRANCH, GA -- The votes are in and with 41.1 percent of the tally, Atlanta.HighSchoolSports.net's Game of the Week is Apalachee at Flowery Branch.

The Region 8-4A match-up features a 1-0 Apalachee team and the 2-0 Falcons. Flowery Branch beat Madison County 21-0 on the road and topped Winder-Barrow 28-0 at home.

Apalachee beat Habersham Central 35-7 at home, but now the Wildcats are on the road facing a team that has yet to give up a single point.

Up from 3A, Flowery Branch will be playing a host of new region teams, including Apalachee, whom they have never met. Though still early in the season, this game could be a big clue as to how Region 8-4A will play out.

With 36 percent of this week's vote, Peachtree Ridge-Newnan almost edged out the Falcon-Wildcat match-up. But a late rush of votes put the battle at the Branch on top.

Griffin Marine to be Buried on Anniversary of September 11th Pledge

GRIFFIN, GA - Hundreds of people lined the streets of Griffin on Tuesday to honor the sacrifice of 20-year-old U.S. Marine Corps Lance Corporal Christopher Blake Rodgers.

Blake, as his family and friends knew him, died of combat wounds suffered in Afghanistan last Wednesday.

His combat tour, which began last March, was to have ended in two weeks.

Among those saluting the motorcade escorting Rodgers' body home was a former high school classmate, U.S. Army Private First Class Andrew Roberson.

He is scheduled to deploy to Afghanistan in December.

"It makes you think about the impression that I'm gonna leave whenever I do go over there, if something happens," Roberson said.

Blake Rodgers joined the Marines a few months after graduating from high school in 2008.

But his uncle says Blake committed to serve his country at a much younger age.
