GDOT: Scam artists preying on drivers, job seekers

GDOT: Scam artists preying on drivers, job seekers

ATLANTA -- The Georgia Department of Transportation says scam artists posing as GDOT workers are targeting Metro Atlantans.

In one case, GDOT said a driver with a flat tire pulled over on Interstate 75 near Moores Mill Road, where he was approached by a man wearing a gray safety vest in a white Dodge pickup truck. The man identified himself as a GDOT employee.

"They actually got the wheel from the tire, said if the motorist would give them 100 dollars they'd take the wheel, get a tire, put on it and bring it back," said GDOT spokesman Mark McKinnon.

"And of course, they were not one of our HERO units and they actually never returned."

GDOT said a second case involved a man who claimed to be a "federal job recruiter" approaching job seekers at various career fairs throughout Metro Atlanta.

Piedmont Healthcare to cut 464 jobs

Piedmont Healthcare to cut 464 jobs

ATLANTA -- Piedmont Healthcare is cutting 5 percent of its workforce after a systemwide review of company costs.

That's equivalent to 464 positions, about a third of which were already vacant, according to Piedmont spokesman Jim Taylor.

"Changes like these are extremely difficult and not without emotion since they impact friends and co-workers,"Piedmont Healthcare President and CEO R. Timothy Stack said in a statement. "In all circumstances, our decisions are based on our responsibility to provide safe, quality care at a competitive price and to be good stewards of our resources as a community-based, not-for-profit healthcare provider."

The job cuts are just a fraction of $68 million in cost-saving measures eyed by the healthcare system.
