DINNERS ON A DIME: Atlanta Taquerias

DINNERS ON A DIME: Atlanta Taquerias

ATLANTA, Ga. – This week, Dinners on a Dime features the best in local taquerias. Every Tuesday Where U Live chooses four favorite eats in your area for you to take your family and friends for a fabulous meal for a price that’s economically feasible in today’s economy.

Taqueria del Sol or TDS is known from their tacos, enchiladas, soups and chilies. The restaurant has four metro locations and they’re always pretty packed for the lunch crowd. Around the newsroom, the fish tacos and shrimp corn chowder reign supreme but TDS loyalists tend to be daring and like to try everything, at least, once. The restaurant also has a pretty impressive selection of tequila and beer. Check them out online or at their Westside, Decatur, Cheshire Bridge and Athens location.

Another popular restaurant, Verde Taqueria has been standing in the Brookhaven neighborhood since 2009.

ADOPT A PET: Meet Marla

ADOPT A PET: Meet Marla

NEWNAN, Ga. – If you dream of coming home to a wet nose, wagging tail and tons of kisses (in addition to, perhaps, a half chewed shoe or overturned trashcan) adopt a puppy from your local pet shelter. According to the ASPCA, approximately 5 million to 7 million domesticated animals enter animal shelters nationwide, every year, and approximately 3 million to 4 million are euthanized. However, you can change those numbers but adopting a “companion” for yourself or your family. Pets are an investment but, in our opinion, an investment well worth the money.

Marla is a small, Chow Chow/Newfoundland mix and she needs a home, very soon. According to the Humane Society, Marla is full of personality, very loving and affectionate. She is considered an urgent pet, which means she must be adopted soon or she will be euthanized.

COWETA: Georgia opens first new state park in 18 years

NEWNAN, Ga. -- Georgia has opened its first new state park in 18 years.

Volunteers and others gathered at a new visitor center Friday to celebrate the opening of Chattahoochee Bend State Park in western Coweta County.

In a time of major budget cuts in park spending, the park was able to open using volunteer labor.

Kim Hatcher, a spokeswoman for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, which runs the park system, said local support was key to the park's opening.

It is Georgia's first new state park since Tallulah Gorge opened in 1993.

The park is aimed at paddlers and anglers, but hikers and campers will also find amenities, including huts, restrooms, camping platforms and a visitor center.

NEWNAN: Missing toddler found safe

NEWNAN, Ga.  -- A toddler who was reported missing in Coweta County Thursday night has been found safe in North Carolina.

A Levi's Call was issued for 2-year-old Cameron Thomas Marsh after Coweta County Sheriff's officers said his mother Laura Marsh took him from his grandparents. She does not have custody of the boy.

Police said she ran off with Cameron after breaking into her mother's home at around 6 p.m. Thursday, hitting her mother several times with a pipe and stealing her purse and car.

Authorities said Laura Marsh is bipolar and has a history of violent confrontations with law enforcement. She was considered armed and dangerous.

An unidentified trucker in North Carolina called police after spotting the missing car heading north on I-85 at around 2 a.m. Friday. Highway Patrol officers quickly caught up and arrested Laura Marsh. She now faces federal charges.

People urged not to shop, work to protest Ga. law

ATLANTA (AP) -- As many parts of Georgia's law cracking down on illegal immigration take effect, a Latino community group is organizing "a day without immigrants" to protest the measure.

The Georgia Latino Alliance for Human Rights is calling for a day of non-compliance, asking businesses to close and community members to stay home and not work or shop Friday.

Alan Conner, owner of Dakota Blue restaurant in Grant Park, said he thinks the law is unjust and planned to close for lunch Friday in solidarity.

But some urge caution. Jerry Gonzalez, executive director of the Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials, says skipping work without authorization could cost people jobs in a tough economic climate.

Groups are also organizing a "march for justice" on Saturday at the state Capitol to protest the law.
